I have received a request from a former player (whom you knew as Fozzy) to try once more to bring back SpiritWars.  Do any of you have an interest in trying again?  We would need to initiate a crowdfunding campaign, find programmers, etc.  I still have all the design documents and code, but I have no knowledge of programming or how to do this.  Lord knows, I've tried.  And tried.  And tried.  And failed over and over.  Please let me know your thoughts.

Hey all,

Chris Brooks, who was previously working on SpiritWars, has been putting together a new strategy game. He's pitched it at the Square-Enix Collective. Congratulations! Here's the trailer.

Hi Fozzy,
I'm so happy to see you here!  Randy would be so pleased to find his old friends/players looking forward to SpiritWars' return.  We have added a new developer/programmer to the team, also named Chris.  We are moving forward with a development tool called Unity.  This should allow the game to perform on multiple platforms.  I would love  to discuss the finer points of the game or programming issues but alas, I am just a nurse, I never played the game (although I had an active presence in the chat rooms as Mom), and my role on the  development team is cheerleader.  Randy's and my son Eric is also part of the team and our other son Jonathan  is advising as his schedule allows.  It has been 7.5 years since Randy's sudden death and it has been my dream to bring the game back.  I think we just might succeed this time.  Please continue to check back here for updates.  Progress is slow because we all have other jobs/responsibilities but we are really trying!

Although we are a LONG way from having a working game, I think it's time for you to meet the team.  George--whom you know as Light--is our project manager.  Chris--sorry, Chris, I can't remember your SpiritWars name--is our lead programmer and his son, Ian is in the programming department.  Eric, whom you know as Randy's and my son, is our lead advisor and Bill, who never played SpiritWars, is our graphic artist.  I'm the MOM--I have no function other than to cheer the team on.  (I also own the game and it's trademark.)  We would love to hear from you.  We anticipate posting a screen shot or two of an updated interface.  Please let us know that you're still here.
       Love, Mom

Hi Psyclone!
I'm happy to hear from you!  Right now our team of six is working to stabilize our plan.  We all have regular jobs or school so things cannot move at the pace we would like.  Right now, the best thing you could do is to help us get the word out that there are messages to be read here.  I would like our SpiritWars family to know that we are trying once more to bring the game back, but because I was unsuccessful in my previous attempts, visits to this message board are rare.  If you have any suggestions, please let us know.  Our team is meeting every week  using Skype because some of us are West coasters and the rest are East coasters.  When I have permission from the team, I will introduce them here.  I do not want to spread false hopes; we must remain cautious.  But there is reason for me to believe that we have a better chance now than we did with any of the other attempts.

Hello Friends,
I have something to share with you.  We are going to try once again to wake up the spirits.  Two former players have joined my son Eric, my friend Bill and me to form a team to attempt once more to bring back the game.  This is the first time we will use a team approach.  I am cautiously optimistic that we will make progress over the coming months.  Please watch for progress reports here.

Announcements / Shall we try again? Would you be willing to help us?
« on: April 28, 2016, 08:49:19 PM »
Hello friends,
I've tried SO many times to bring back SpiritWars and have failed at every turn, but I want to try one more time.  Eric and I have been in communication with a player you all knew as Light.  We are in the early stages of developing a plan.  We will be reviewing Randy's design documents to use as a starting point.  We will be looking at updating the graphics and our intent is to rewrite the game so players will not need to download a client.  We will need to update the chat system.  There is a LOT of work to be done but I really want to try again.  I envision putting together an advisory panel of former players.  Would you be willing to help?  My older son Jonathan recently ran a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to publish his book and he was successful, although he needed to raise only $7000.  We will need substantially more for SpiritWars, but at least I have an idea of what will be needed to initiate the campaign.
One thing I want to put out for discussion now:  I want to stay true to Randys' vision of a fair and level playing field.  I DO NOT want to move to a pay-to-win model.  In today's market, can we succeed with a subscription model?
Please post your thoughts here.  I promise you that I will read them all.  Thank you!
     Love, Lyn   (aka Mom)

Hi Light,
I sent a message to your email account you listed when you registered for this message board.  I felt foolish that I didn't think of it sooner, but I am an admin here so I had access to it.  I provided you with my email address and phone number. (Eric and I are the only administrators here.)  I would really like to talk to you about steps needed to make this happen.  It may not be possible but I would like to try one more time.  People tell me to give up, let it go.  But I'm not ready to do that yet.  Please respond to my e-mail or, if you are unable to access it, respond here and we'll figure out another plan.  Thank you!
                Lyn
PS:  Could you please let me know your first name?

Hello Light,
What a thrill it was to log on and find your post!  It has now been seven years since Randy's death.  I have longed to bring back SpiritWars and have tried several times, to no avail.  I think I want to try one more time.  Jonathan is now 32 years old and just got funded last week on Kickstarter for a text book he wrote, so I have a basic understanding of what is needed to initiate a Kickstarter campaign.  Eric is now 21 and recently changed his major to computer science.  His C++ instructor told him he had the aptitude for coding, although he is still in the early stages of the learning process.
Light, do you live in the United States?  If so I would like to talk to you on the phone.  (If you don't live in the US we could still communicate by e-mail.)  If you wish we can communicate here initially but if you are a Facebook user, I am, too.  My name is Lyn Chase and, frankly, I don't know how to search for people on Facebook to rule out all the ones who are NOT the person you are seeking, but I live in Happy Valley, Oregon, if that helps.  Once we have established communication, I will provide my phone number if you wish.
After 5.5 years of widowhood, I finally found a boyfriend and he is a graphic artist and web developer, so we have a great resource for graphics and art.  I must emphasize, however, that I CANNOT undertake this without the help and support of the SpiritWars community.  I never played the game.  I just participated in the community and watched as Randy grew something amazing out of thin air.
Thank you for your thoughtful post.  My spirits are buoyed!

SpiritWars Discussion / Re: Progress
« on: September 03, 2014, 04:31:57 PM »
Hi Chris,
Welcome back!  Eric and I are leaving on our vacation tomorrow.  Our passports arrived yesterday.  We're going to Vancouver and Victoria, BC.  My life is finally calming down.  My business is closed and I am gainfully employed at a senior housing community owned and operated by the Odd Fellows fraternal organization.  I am continuing to teach nursing assistant classes and am the Program Director as I was for my own business but now I get a paycheck!
Please don't give up on SpiritWars!  Now that I have more time, I'll work at getting the word out by sending personal e-mails.  I think people are apprehensive about expressing enthusiasm because we've had so many false starts.  I will definitely have more time and energy to invest in the game now.  I cannot participate in discussions about game design or play, but if you want to talk about the best way to pack a wound........

SpiritWars Discussion / Re: Progress
« on: July 29, 2014, 06:35:16 AM »
Hi Chris,
I'm so excited that you're moving forward!  I am winding down my nursing assistant training business and am now employed nearly full-time with a new company.  When I get their program stabilized I'll have more time to breathe.  It's getting closer but it's still a mess.  I am looking forward to the day when I can gather together the SpiritWars family we used to have and catch up on the news.  During the nine years that SpiritWars was on-line, we had people meet, some for casual get-togethers, some for romance.  We had one couple in Australia who met  here and had a baby together.  Although I never played SpiritWars, I felt that I was an integral part of the community and was accepted despite my failure to learn the game.  Thank you, Chris, for giving us hope that SpiritWars will return.
